Painted while at anchor in Peleliu, one of the small islands of Palau.  Trying to master the technique of creating realistic clouds, I was also illustrating the passage we'd made through the Rock Islands to arrive at Peleliu, where Bill had been a Marine during one of WWII's bloodiest and least-required battles.  The watercolor paper I'd used was the back of another painting, one done with colored inks that had bled off the edges.  Though it was meant to be just an exercise in clouds, the whole of it came together for me in a way I love and cannot explain.  Haunting, but satisfying.
