Fires Within
My sister, Donalie, the sculptor of glass and metal (as opposed to my other sisters, equally fine artists in other mediums), has been sending texts with photos of her sculptures, via her iPhone. Traditionally a person who mistrusted (read: was adamantly not interested in owning a computer), the gift of an iPhone from her daughters has finally seduced her. Recently, she mentioned thinking about starting a blog...
Well, since I already have a blog on this website, and one of my intents was to share the art of others on it, here is her update of a recent encounter with her muse and the subsequent metamorphosis of her work. It begins with her cleaning and altering an older sculpture that had been in a gallery for a while, including a text of the sequence of events to the gallery owner:
"I know that this whole process that I've been going through for the last couple weeks has been, well, actually...longer than that, but it's all been to lead me to something better and just holding onto that makes it happen. It's been six months since I've made a sale...Saturday morning the card from your gift of 'The Muse' fell out on the floor but I was intent on getting on the road by six, so in my haste thought "I'll pick that up when I get back from Carmel"...Spirit told me "Read it now." (I had inadvertently touched the Muse the day before and now realize that she had shifted my energy because I got more done in two days than I have in months!). After I reading the 'muse' card I was able to finish repairing the piece by noon and get on the road at one:
"The Fire Rekindled "(Before)

and… in keeping with my new genre, I re-titled her, "Fire In Her Heart" (After)

...then, what an exhilarating vision when I pulled into the Gallery driveway and saw two men taking pictures of all my pieces--and I knew I was experiencing a precious moment of synchronicity...
..."Jorge", the man next to me, an artist who paints car hoods, didn't speak any English but gave me a ceremonial kiss on each cheek as a Thank You...and Billy said, as she was writing up the sale… "that girl IS on fire!!"
--Zadie Smith--
ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,
"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.
