Life Tourist ...or Resident?

This post was begun in September of 2017 and abandoned, censored by an internal critic as too...critical:

"...while reading a FASO essay about committing to a life as an artist, I had an epiphany that segued with an earlier realization of no longer wanting to live my life as a 'Cruising' sailor, again.

Elsewhere are the chronicled  puzzle pieces of life lived as a Cruiser, and how, after sixteen years of building and living aboard our boat, followed by eight years of sailing South and West through the Pacific, Bill and I came into a fulfilling combination of nine (the two of us) and eight (widowed) years of living at anchor in the Philippine Islands, Port Bonbonon, Tambobo, at the very bottom tip of Negros Oriental.

It was in that latter time of making solo decisions when thoughts of no longer wanting to 'cruise' the world began to surface.  It no longer seemed as adventurous, meaningful way to live. Though I still felt fully committed to the community of people living lives aboard boats, it was the life of visiting foreign cultures as a tourist, sailing from anchorage to anchorage, skimming the surface of the lives and lands, that began to feel like a thin diet of hors d'oeuvres. Since arriving in the Philippines and the serendipitous creation of One Candle Schoolhouse, I  had, for the first time in my life, become an active participant of a stationary community.  However, very much like someone not able to fully commit to marriage, I've been on a tourist visa for seventeen years even though I had become more Resident than Tourist. Why?  As with the presence of children tipping the scales more than the sanctity of marriage to a Wanderer, I had been accepted into the lives of the families living on shore.  Through the students, and somewhat painful self-examinations, I'd begun to discern unexpectedly rich nuances of  a life lived fully within a different culture.

Arguably, there were many other places to happily live out my life, but was there really any place BETTER?  Even if still on a tourist visa, not a committed resident, THIS place and I had evolved past the 'honeymoon' stage.  We have a history together.  We've become entwined, warts and all..."

This is where I will stop quoting from the aforementioned 'post-that-might-have-been'. What remains of it will be reborn within the next couple of posts. A legible transcript of the photograph above has been posted, which reiterates this post while providing transition into the plethora of other bottled-up 'wanna-be/NEED-to-be' posts not made during the past three months.  Bear with me.  Wonderful things have been happening. Lots of photos.

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,

"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.

I'm happy that you skirted past your critic and posted this story Diane! I plan on sharing this with my nephew who is a Wanderer (currently in Columbia and heading back to Thailand next). Though I am a Nester/Homebody I adore travel for the joy of meeting other folks and learning about other cultures. right now most of my travel is done via books and blogs! thanks again for giving me this gift of -being in your shoes' through your writing!

Francis, it is such a joy to share posts and comments with you! I wish I could include MY newsletters in that group --but I will, I will, now that the long period of no laptop is over. In the meantime, YOUR latest newsletter is as inspiring/motivating/delightfully-right-on as always and was instantly read aloud to my co-worker, the dance metaphor perfect for illustrating the dynamics we often struggle with when communicating. I hope readers of my blog will follow this link and be equally energized and gifted by getting to know you and your vibrant art:

...and download the screensaver, as I have, to bring a glowing smile to their faces, too, like mine every time I see it.

Hi Diane - Wow! I'm thrilled that you like my newsletter and are sharing it/reading it to friends - Yay! \

Thank you for continuing to encourage me to write and to share. I draw courage and chutzpah (LOVE that word) from you, your writing and your ever-evolving website. I've got it bookmarked so now I can find you easily!

Sending more delight to you and yours. Plus! I'm excited to read an update on the Saturday Art Afternoon how the life-size portrait/floor puzzle(!) project is coming along at the schoolhouse. Love this whole idea and bet everyone is enjoying themselves with it!

...take another look at my home page, Frances--I realized I hadn't even mentioned your name so went one step better and snagged a screen shot of you with one of your felt sculptures!

Your website is astounding in its variety of creative 'feasts for the eyes'. Every nook is filled with YES!YES!YES! 's that overflow right into the viewer's heart. This viewer was so energized by your work that (with your permission?) wants to add your name and selected artworks to her Co-Artist's menu.

Especially LOVED are your hand-colored wood block prints...want to see more of them and figure out where I might have space on PILAR to have one...

Frances, you have a standing invitation to join us in Tambobo as a Saturday Afternoon Guest Artist, please teach us how to make wonderful art like yours!?

Big hugs back to you,
d

Hi ho Diane! More wows! You're on fire with your website my dear: Go Diane Go! .....and I'm blushing from all the kind words you've written about me. Thank you!

How I wish I could transport myself to the Philippines to meet you and make stuff with you guys - how fun will this be? (Notice I used the future tense as you never know how and when things work out!) I'm looking forward to our to and fro banter and exchange of ideas and stories as our writing and websites continue to evolve. Fun and Yes! xoxo fcf

Thanks, Francis, you deserve all the kudos given plus a further compliment on the delightfully fulsome email response you sent to my inquiry, asking how you created those gorgeous scarves on your site!

I will be forwarding your letter to my nieces as soon as I can take a moment from 'being on fire' (which really means running around trying to contain all the little fires bursting into life from an abundance of energy, don't you know?! :-D). Hence, this delayed reply to your always generous comment. Love getting these comments, feedback...they always lead to such interesting connections. In the meantime, I hope others take advantage of the link to see your work and also want to know more...let's add scarf-dying to the list of workshops we'll do when you visit!
