Saturday Art Afternoons

"What you produce is not always sacred...What is sacred is the time you spend working on the project, and what that time does to expand your imagination, and what that expanded imagination does to transform your life."

The above quote came from the book my niece, Alison, recently sent to me:

BIG MAGIC, Creative Living Beyond Fear, by Elizabeth Gilbert.

When I read it, I immediately put down the book and opened the laptop in order to make a quick post of it to my home page, which I've begun using somewhat like one of the social media platforms I don't know much about, other than they are quickie ways to connect.

I have not used any of them because I'm not very good at quickie anything.  Generally, I have to labor to unearth what it is I want to say or accomplish; the lasting effects of a perfectionist mother impatient with young children's learning curves. Sigh.

However, ingrained ways can be modified, I'm happy to report, which is why I responded so strongly to Gilbert's observation about being creative...it is exactly what I persist in conveying every Saturday with whomever joins us for the afternoons of discovering our collectively innate creativity.

It is exactly what gave me the courage to post something further to this site's navigation bar category, SATURDAY ART.

When I'd set up the new format, several months ago, I'd had my biggest hopes for showcasing the truly delightful artworks being produced by children and adults who swore they had no abilities for art.  But then the sheer variety of what we were doing overwhelmed me...I wanted to make short videos rather than still photos, wanted readers to feel they were participating, too...but all that took time to do right, and DOING IT RIGHT (NOW!) became a taskmaster I couldn't face.

So let me say right now that I'm determined to not let that old buggaboo--needing to be PERFECT--keep me from practicing what I preach to the others:  it's okay to not be perfectly skilled--ever.

It's GOOD to make imperfect things because that's how we learn and grow and make our lives happier and more rewarding.

Maybe not perfect, but as deeply rewarding as if it were.

And who's to decide Chay Chay's little sculpture isn't perfect?

"Talking to yourself can be useful. And writing means being overheard."
--Zadie Smith--

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,

"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.

Believe I'll share this post on my Facebook page!

What a guy you are! Would you believe the coincidence, too--that while you were reading the post in California, I've been working aboard PILAR at the same time, editing a bit on the slideshow for Saturday Art, of the first post begun by the kids', to their very own page on this website.

Initially I had intended to go into town today, be a good little trooper and take care of business, but all I really wanted to do was complete the slideshow for them, of photos that were taken last Saturday...so did! Although I have to admit that initially I'd promised myself to just DO it, not FUSS, not make it a monument to my needy ego--and for the most part I've succeeded, but not totally. And not just for my ego, but for the kids'. Particularly, John Resty, who did a truly great job of capturing a typical Saturday...and when you see it, you'll understand why I'd been overwhelmed with what felt too large and time-consuming to begin.

True, it has been time-consuming, I haven't and won't have, the time to do other tasks promised for today, but I don't care. I'm just so happy to show what the kids are like, what they do...their smiles and their learning curves, the whole bunch of us exploring new stuff...yes, and with me, slowly melting by the end of the days, as well....

Worth it. Especially when I see what they come up with on their own.

Will be converting and uploading the video soon. Tonight. Will announce it, when that happens...I know you will like it.

As always, Mark, I am so touched and grateful for your interest and support. Thanks...so very much.

DID IT! Uploaded the video...and of course then spied the imperfection of spelling what we had for lunch.
(who cares?! I'm too happy to fuss over such a small detail when the whole of it puts such a glow in my heart)

Here it is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/g0rTWmT44KY or see the whole post at SATURDAY ART, on the dashboard above.
