The Old Ways_Typhoon update
Still no electricity in Tambobo but internet has been restored. The large generator we've been privileged to use at the house while its owner remains confined to Hong Kong, has always been able to keep the refrigerator cold enough for ice when we had brown-outs, but not this time. Possibly because (laughter, please) we attempted to supply cell phone charges for the entire village all week?
Whatever the reason, the bottles of water traditionally kept frozen to use for keeping food cold in an 'Esky' (Styrofoam cooler) aboard PILAR, were no more. My beautiful boat has never had refrigeration. In San Francisco and along the coast of California down to Mexico the seawater was always cold enough to keep butter fresh, beer cool, but in the Sea of Cortez we simply drank warm beer and shopped daily for fresh foods. The last seven years of having refrigeration at the house has spoiled me...BUT, along the way from Baja to the Philippines a few of the 'old ways' for lengthening the life of perishables came into use.
Yesterday, with an Esky full of warm food, bottles of tepid water, and cool air billowing beneath PILAR's companionway awning, desperation brought salvation. Please indulge me with this small pictorial fantasy around PILAR's newest crew member in charge of refrigeration:

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,
"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.
