Daniel

Unbeknownst to me until the end of the day, Saturday, the 30th of April, was Danel's last Saturday Art with us for an extended time. He and his father left for Australia the following Tuesday, May 3rd, possibly to stay permanently.  A big 'boo-hoo' for me, which is evident in the opening photos of this YouTube video, possibly the last photo of Daniel and me, together:

Happily, I'd taken my usual excess of photographs during the day, an excess motivated by delight for the variety of activities the students were instigating, so there were plenty of Daniel to make his last day memorable on YouTube.

However, Daniel also has a folder filled with his artwork worth sharing but this one is a special breakthrough: it is his first WRITTEN story, made possible by detouring his dyslexia difficulties. With Jacen's help in transcribing his oral tale, he then typed her transcription himself, directly into a document:

 GODZILLA SAVES THE OWLS

Godzilla was on an island,
he found some owls in trouble from the giant trying to eat the owls.

So Godzilla trying to use his water power to save the owls
from the lion giant.

When Godzilla destroy the giant the owls fly up to him and said thank you Godzilla.
THE END

GOOD NEWS!  Daniel will be back with us again, in July!

"Talking to yourself can be useful. And writing means being overheard."
--Zadie Smith--

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,

"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.

Very touching, Diane. Faces with features I don't often see here, but with happiness and care that I think is recognized everywhere. Thank you.

So gratifying, your appreciation of what the kids are experiencing. Me, too. Especially when (as I hope to share in the next couple of blog posts) I see their leaps of imagination increasing the self-confidence needed to explore ideas even further while minimizing fears of failure. There will be LOTS more of those happy faces for you to enjoy, soon.
