The Small Dailies

Recently I came across this forgotten photograph of two local boys. Delighted with the captured secret moment between them (wish I had even an inkling of what they were doing that obviously pleased them both so much) I moved it to my desktop to...ah, do something with it...

Two days ago, wanting to balance a heartfelt lament in a reply to an erudite friend who'd just introduced the word and definition of 'Solastalgia' to me, the photo of the two boys leapt up as a truer portrait of how my days are usually filled, rather than what I'd been bemoaning. So I wrote back to her: "...almost every day I see and love sights that are priceless moments I cannot often capture with my camera, as I did with this one."

To which my dear friend responded with, "Love this!  You’re describing my number one approach to life, “the small dailies” I call them – the precious beautiful moments that remind us life is beautiful and so much more than we “think.”  A sweet conversation with a woman in the grocery store.  Smile and wave to neighbor walking by.  Watching the toddler across the street as she navigates the world, barefoot, determined with a big smile.  Kindness of Michael to get out his ladder to wash the garden window so the sprouting orchid shows off.  On and on.  Every day is full of them…"

Yes, Maura, you are so very right.  I am going to be posting more of these 'every day' moments of precious beauty.  Thank you for the inspiration!

"Talking to yourself can be useful. And writing means being overheard."

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,

"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.
