Alphabet Art

“Life has become very dear to me, and I am very glad that I love.
My life and my love are one.”

--Vincent Van Gogh--

...Monica, 13, and I have been attempting to learn each other's language. But, as she has not yet learned to read in any language, projects with the alphabet have been the focus.  With the advent of other student's days occupied with their school's modules, and Resty Joy (also 13) not having a group to study with, she brings her weekly module to the house for companionship as well as to give much needed help with translations of Bisaya/English between myself and Monica.  Here is our first creative effort to learn the alphabet:

Initially her alphabet began 'A B D C...' but we corrected and continued, leaving the 'N' reversed accidentally.  Her difficulty reciting the correct sequence for 'G' and 'J' prompted a second hands-on exercise, to reinforce by repetition, but this time with water color paints on Upper/Lower case letters:

This exercise included four of us this time, all of us painting while singing repeated chorus's of the Alphabet Song.  Here is Resty Joy's work,  showing delightful skill at graphic design:

Ludy's poster and mine:

To keep motivated and to rewarded for the arduous work of learning to read and write any language, we start our afternoons with choosing a recipe to bake for snack. Here, we're making Apple Muffins:

...after copying the recipe in both languages (myself included in this task of learning to speak their language), Monica has the added incentive of later encoding the recipe for printing and collecting into her own cook book.

"If no one ever took risks, Michelangelo would have painted the Sistine floor."

--Neil Simon--

(me? The best thing I can say is that I keep the girls laughing with my attempts to paint in their language)

"Talking to yourself can be useful. And writing means being overheard."
--Zadie Smith--

ahh...but as Thomas Mann said,

"Speech is civilization itself.
The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact
-- it is silence which isolates.

Food for the body, food for the intellect, food for the heart - that is YOU, Diane!

...and this, dearest Maura, is YOU, the poetic message that I found and gave to you, maybe thirty years ago, that I again just posted on my home page and begins with: The most visible creators I know of...

Dearest Diane, Looking at your blog last time, I couldn't find a way to comment on "The most visible creators..." post and planned to write you an email about it. So it's lovely to be able to comment now. To tell you that the card you gave me years ago with the beautiful message was the first time I'd ever seen those words. I was touched and deeply honored that you saw my heart and understood my efforts to live and practice from that ineffable foundation. It was the most profound mirroring I had ever experienced in that essential aspect. Up until that time, I had viewed myself as not creative since I didn't paint, sculpt or play music. Can you understand what an opening it was to be considered creative by you, an artist!! I kept and treasured that card, looking at it on the fridge as a reminder not only of my essential desire in life but the possibility of being an” artist.” The card was ruined along with other treasures in a box set on a floor that flooded in a storage unit between moves. I was heart-broken. Then I found a copy again in Bookshop Santa Cruz and now it's now back on my fridge where I see it daily. How to say in a few words the impact of being seen so clearly and profoundly, sparking the impetus to continue expanding as an -artist of being alive.” I used to say semi-jokingly that my goal in life was to be a modern day Johnny Appleseed, seeing each encounter day in, day out as an opportunity for true connection, in whatever form emerged. As I wrote you once, during a very long very dark period in my life, the "small dailies" are what allowed me to claw my way back into fully living again. Small dailies, another term for Johnny's apple-seeds. Long since retired from professional life, still this is the way I live. Now without the false humility of pretense, I know these small minutes of connection are precious, innocuously so, gifts to another's heart. Strangers, friends or family, appreciative attention is heartening and essential. When you, as an exquisite artist, writer, boat-builder, wood-worker, teacher, network creator, photographer, handy woman - one of the most versatile, skilled, kind and creative people I know; when you saw the depth in me, you -expressed the unexpressible,” opening my own fuller understanding about my purpose in life 30 some years ago. What greater gift can be given! Thank you beyond words for your gift that deeply affirmed, heartened, and yes, guided my life. And thank you now for the opportunity to reflect back to you how your gift of being so clearly seen has been a beacon all these years. With ongoing love and affection always. Maura

Somehow the correct punctuation and formatting of the above note was altered, leaving that weird word stew, but hopefully you can make sense of it.

...I wonder how many other artists, reading such an overwhelming tribute, would also have been unable to respond immediately, unable to utter even a simplest, most hopelessly inadequate words of gratitude: Thank You, my friend. I do so here, now, belatedly (though a more expansive response has already been made directly), because Maura's experience is something deeply precious to all of us. It is much needed to be GIVEN, as well as received--the more often, the better! Our lives depend on being 'seen' and given the support needed to let ourselves be the artists of life that we were born to be. Thank you, Maura, and all others who have taken the thought-full time to respond with comments to this website's daily artwork of watering tender shoots of creativity within others who pass along this pathway.
